We are proud to announce the launch of BACKTRACK – Building Awareness and Critical Knowledge through Training, Reflection, Action, and Community Knowledge.

In an information environment where disinformation can undermine trust, deepen polarisation and weaken democratic participation, strengthening citizens’ ability to recognise and challenge manipulation is more important than ever. BACKTRACK takes a distinctive approach. The project places a particular focus on citizens aged 45+, while bringing together younger people aged 18–30 in intergenerational learning activities. Together, participants will explore how past propaganda, historical narratives and contemporary disinformation intersect — and develop practical skills for navigating today’s digital information environment.

The project brings together partners from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine, creating a cross-border space for sharing experience and strengthening democratic resilience.

As the Ukrainian partner, the Institute of Innovative Governance will contribute its expertise from a country where communities have faced sustained and sophisticated information warfare. In particular, IIG will lead the project’s youth digital-literacy and fact-checking activities, helping young participants develop practical skills in identifying misinformation, using verification techniques, understanding crisis communication, protecting their digital footprint and building resilience.
